How Many Shingle Bundles Do I Need?

Most asphalt shingles ship three bundles per square. Type your address: we measure the roof from map data and tell you how many bundles to order, with waste. Free, no sign-up, no phone number.

1. Find your house

US addresses only. Include the city and state.

Pressing the button sends the address to RoofGenius and on to free public map lookups (OpenStreetMap and the U.S. Census Bureau) to find the house. We don't ask for your name, email or phone, and the address is not saved to any account.

A planning count, not an order. Most 3-tab and architectural shingles are 3 bundles per square; some designer and certain laminated lines differ. Confirm the coverage printed on the wrapper, and add starter strip and ridge cap separately.

Bundles from squares

Squares to order = roof squares × (1 + waste) Field bundles ≈ squares to order × 3 (most asphalt shingles) Starter ≈ eave length (ft) ÷ coverage per bundle Ridge cap ≈ ridge length (ft) ÷ coverage per bundle

This page counts the field bundles from your roof size. For starter, ridge cap, underlayment and nails in one takeoff, use the complete shingle calculator once you know the squares.

Frequently asked questions

How many shingle bundles does a 2,000 sq ft house need?

About 100 field bundles for a one-story house with a two-car garage and a 6/12 gable, assuming 3 bundles per square and 10% waste. Add starter strip and ridge cap on top.

How many bundles are in a square of shingles?

Usually three for 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles. Some designer and laminated lines pack differently — read the coverage on the wrapper.

Can I get a bundle count from my address for free?

Yes. Type the address on this page. No sign-up, and we never ask for your name, email or phone.

Does this include starter and ridge cap?

No. This page counts field bundles from roof size. Use the shingle calculator for starter, ridge cap, underlayment and nails once you have the squares.

Should I order extra?

Yes — the squares-to-order figure already includes a waste factor (about 10% gable, 15% hip). Keep a few spare bundles for future repairs; dye lots change.
