Shingle Bundle Calculator
Bundles per square depend on the product. Pick the shingle, enter the roof area and waste, and get bundles for the field, starter and ridge.
Bundles for your roof
Bundles per square by shingle type
| Shingle type | Bundles per square | Typical weight per square | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-tab | 3 | ≈200–250 lb | Flat, single-layer; cheapest |
| Architectural (laminated) | 3 | ≈250–350 lb | Today's default residential shingle |
| Heavy architectural | 4 | ≈350–430 lb | Thicker lines from several brands |
| Designer / luxury | 4–5 | ≈380–500 lb | Slate- and shake-look laminates |
⌈ ⌉ means round up. You cannot buy a partial bundle, and a single bundle short holds up the whole crew.
Worked examples
Can you cut 3-tab shingles into starter and ridge cap? Many roofers do, but most architectural shingles cannot be cut into cap, and manufacturer warranties often require the matching starter and hip & ridge products.
