How Many Squares Is My Roof?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof. Type your address: we read the house outline from map data, apply your pitch, and tell you the squares — and how many to order with waste. Free, no sign-up, no phone number.

1. Find your house

US addresses only. Include the city and state.

Pressing the button sends the address to RoofGenius and on to free public map lookups (OpenStreetMap and the U.S. Census Bureau) to find the house. We don't ask for your name, email or phone, and the address is not saved to any account.

2. Your roof in squares

3. Fine-tune the count

Change the pitch, roof style or size and the estimate above updates.

A planning count, not a survey. Squares come from a map outline plus the pitch you pick. Confirm on site or with a paid aerial report before ordering a full roof of material.

What a roofing square is

Roofers price and order by the square: 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,500 sq ft roof is 25 squares. The number on a bid is usually a bit higher than the measured area because of waste for cuts at hips, valleys and rakes.

Squares = roof area (sq ft) ÷ 100 Squares to order = squares × (1 + waste) gable ≈ 10%, hip ≈ 15%, cut-up ≈ 20% Bundles ≈ squares to order × 3 (most 3-tab and architectural shingles)

The planning house above. Living area 2,000 sq ft + two-car garage → footprint about 2,480 sq ft. With 1 ft of eaves and a 6/12 pitch: 3,006 sq ft of roof = 30.1 squares, or 33.3 to order with 10% waste.

How this page gets your number

  1. Looks up the address and picks your house outline from OpenStreetMap.
  2. Measures the footprint, adds a small eave allowance, multiplies by the pitch multiplier.
  3. Divides by 100 for squares, then adds waste for the roof style you pick.

Want the full size breakdown (footprint, pitch multiplier, bundles and a price range)? Use roof measurement by address. Want a price for every material? Roof estimate by address.

Frequently asked questions

How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft house?

About 30.1 squares of roof for a one-story house with a two-car garage and a 6/12 gable (~3,006 sq ft of roof), or about 33.3 squares to order with 10% waste. A two-story house with the same living area has a much smaller roof.

How do I calculate roofing squares?

Take the true roof area in square feet (footprint including overhangs, times the pitch multiplier) and divide by 100. Add waste before you order.

Is roof size the same as my home's square footage?

No. Living area is inside the walls on every floor. Roof size is the sloped surface over the top floor plus the garage and overhangs.

Can I get my roof squares from an address for free?

Yes. Type the address on this page. There is no sign-up or fee, and we never ask for your name, email or phone.

How accurate is an address-based square count?

When the house is mapped well, the footprint is usually within a few percent. Pitch and overhang are the bigger unknowns, so set those carefully before you order material.
