Is a 4/12 Pitch Good for Metal Roofing?

Yes. At 18.4°, a 4/12 roof is comfortably above the usual 3/12 minimum for screw-down and snap-lock metal panels, and far above what mechanically seamed standing seam needs. It is also one of the cheapest slopes to install on, since crews can walk it. Here is what to check before you order.

Minimum slopes for metal roofing

Typical minimum slopes. The panel maker's installation guide governs.
Panel systemTypical minimum slope4/12 OK?
Exposed-fastener (R-panel, PBR, corrugated, 5V)3/12 (IRC R905.10.2, laps not sealed); some products lower with lap sealantYes
Snap-lock standing seamUsually 3/12; a few products 2/12 or less with sealantYes
Mechanically seamed standing seamAs low as 1/4/12 (IRC R905.10.2)Yes, with margin
Metal shingles and stone-coated steelCommonly 3/12 (some 2/12 with special underlayment)Yes

So the question isn't whether metal can go on a 4/12 roof. It's which panel and details fit the building. For comparison, asphalt shingles are allowed down to 2/12, but between 2/12 and 4/12 the IRC requires double underlayment. At 4/12 a shingle roof just escapes that rule, and metal has margin to spare.

Why 4/12 works well for metal

  • Drainage: 4 inches of fall per foot moves water off quickly, so end laps and fasteners see little standing water.
  • Walkable: crews can work a 4/12 without roof jacks or a full harness setup for every move (fall protection is still required by OSHA at the eaves). Labor is lower than on a steep roof.
  • Low-key looks: standing seam on a shallow ranch or barndominium roof reads clean and modern, without the tall "wall of metal" look of a steep roof.

Panel length at 4/12

Panel length = horizontal run × 1.0541 + eave overhang 15 ft run: 15 × 1.0541 = 15.81 ft + 2 in overhang ≈ 15 ft 11-3/4 in
40 ft gable, 15 ft run per side, 36 in R-panel. 40 × 12 ÷ 36 = 13.3, so 14 panels per side and 28 total, each about 15' 11-3/4". Roof area ≈ 40 × 15 × 1.0541 × 2 = 1,265 sq ft, so at 80 screws per square that is about 1,012 screws. The metal roofing calculator does this for any size.

On long runs, a single panel from eave to ridge avoids end laps. Where you must lap at a low slope, use the manufacturer's minimum lap length (often 6 inches or more) with butyl tape. A 4/12 roof leaves less margin for a sloppy lap than an 8/12 does.

Details that matter at 4/12

  • Underlayment: use a high-temperature synthetic or self-adhered underlayment rated for metal. Felt can stick to or wrinkle under hot panels.
  • Ice barrier: in cold climates, codes require ice barrier from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall. On a shallow roof with wide eaves that can be two courses.
  • Snow: metal sheds snow even at 4/12, sometimes all at once. Add snow guards above doors, walkways, decks and lower roofs.
  • Condensation: exposed-fastener panels over open framing (pole barns) need a vapor barrier or anti-condensation backing.
  • Fasteners: screw-down roofs need their washers checked every 10 to 15 years. Standing seam has no exposed holes, which suits low slopes, homes and long-term owners.

Code sections cited are from the International Residential Code (IRC). Your jurisdiction may adopt a different edition or amend it, and the panel manufacturer's minimum slope and lap requirements always apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a metal roof on a 4/12 pitch?

Yes. 4/12 is above the usual 3/12 minimum for exposed-fastener and snap-lock panels and far above the 1/4/12 minimum for mechanically seamed standing seam.

What is the minimum pitch for a metal roof?

Under the IRC, 3/12 for lapped, non-soldered panels without lap sealant, 1/2/12 with lap sealant, and 1/4/12 for standing seam. Manufacturer instructions may be stricter.

Is standing seam or exposed-fastener better for a 4/12 roof?

Both work. Exposed-fastener panels cost less, but the screws need maintenance. Standing seam costs more but has no exposed holes and lasts longer, which makes it the usual choice for homes.

How long is a metal panel on a 4/12 roof?

The horizontal run times 1.0541, plus the eave overhang. A 15 ft run needs a panel about 15 ft 11-3/4 in with a 2 in overhang.

Does snow slide off a 4/12 metal roof?

Usually, yes. Metal sheds snow even on low slopes, so add snow guards above entries, walkways and lower roofs.
